How do spider pheromones work?

Spider pheromones are chemical signals exchanged between spiders that play a crucial role in their survival and reproduction strategies. These chemical compounds are created and released by spiders through specialized glands. Once released into the environment, other spiders detect these pheromones through specialized hollow hairs called olfactory organs, which are primarily located on their legs. This detection mechanism enables spiders to interpret various signals, such as mating and marking territory. Spider pheromones are also employed for defense, leading prey to traps and signaling distress.

Are spider pheromones in my lotions?

Spider pheromones are not typically found in lotions and body butter. While it's unusual for these products to directly use spider pheromones, the complex nature of fragrances and the chemical makeup of many ingredients means it's possible for some elements to unintentionally mimic aspects of spider pheromones. However, this would be a rare and unintended occurrence. Most spiders dislike strong fragrances, making it unlikely for lotions to attract spiders. Spiders are generally attracted to areas that offer them shelter and food rather than specific scents, especially those from human-made products.

How to tell spiders you’re not interested
