Termites

The most common termite species in the Tucson area are the subterranean termite and the drywood termite. Subterranean termites live in colonies below ground, but they build mud tunnels that branch upwards in order to seek out cellulose – their primary food source found in wood and paper. They can enter your home via mud tunnels through any foundation that makes contact with soil.

On the flipside, drywood termites live above ground and nest inside the wood structures, living there and feeding on the cellulose found in wood. Drywood termites eat across the wood grain. Both species can cause extensive – and expensive – damage once they establish a presence in your home.

Ants

Common ant species in the Tucson area include the fire ant, harvester ant, odorous house ant, and pavement ant. Each of these species are unwelcome guests in your home, workplace, or backyard and need to be dealt with as swiftly as possible.

Fire ants are bright red in color. These aggressive ants can deliver painful, itchy, blistering bites. Harvester ants can also issue painful bites. These ants create a mound in the dirt and gather seeds for food, sometimes clearing the surrounding area of vegetation. Meanwhile, odorous house ants can make their way into your home via tiny cracks, in search of food. Once inside, they may contaminate your food supplies. Similarly, pavement ants typically nest on the edges of sidewalks and concrete pads, but can get inside your home and also pose a risk of contaminating your food.

Cockroaches

The most common species of cockroach in the Tucson metro area is the German cockroach. This species feeds on the crumbs and liquids that humans leave lying around, giving them a steady source of food and water. They thrive in warm, humid places in your home – such as kitchens and bathrooms. These pests can carry disease-causing pathogens and may also trigger asthma attacks in some individuals.

Rodents

Tucson is home to a variety of mice and rats that may find their way into your home, seeking food and shelter. Rodents have deservedly held a reputation for carrying disease-causing pathogens with them. While this is reason enough to work quickly to get these pests out of your home, they can also cause significant damage to your property – nesting inside walls and chewing on wiring, posing a fire hazard.

Scorpions

These dangerous pests have a venomous sting and are adept at hiding in dark places. Scorpions typically live outdoors, hiding during the day under rocks and in crevices, but they can come indoors through cracks around your doors and windows. You may find them inside shoes, in your garage, inside a drawer, or in your potted plant. Scorpions are most active during the summer.

Spiders

Tucson is host to several venomous species of spiders, including the Desert Recluse, Desert Tarantula, and Black Widow. Each of these spiders pack a potentially dangerous bite and especially in the case of a Black Widow bite, can lead to severe health complications. They tend to nest in dark places – such as storage areas.
